Topping and Tailing Tips

You don’t need to bath your baby every day, although it is a good way to relax them as they get a little older and establish more of a routine. Topping and tailing – washing the important bits – is often enough in those early, sleep deprived days!

Choose a time when your baby is awake and contented and make sure the room is warm. Get everything ready beforehand. You’ll need a bowl of warm water, a towel, cotton wool, a fresh nappy and, if necessary, clean clothes.

Hold your baby on your knee or lay them on a changing mat. Take off all their clothes, apart from their vest and nappy, and wrap them in a towel.

Dip the cotton wool in the water (make sure it doesn’t get too wet) and wipe gently around your baby’s eyes from the nose outward, using a fresh piece of cotton wool for each eye. This is so that you don’t transfer any stickiness or infection from one eye to another.

Use a fresh piece of cotton wool to clean around your baby’s ears, but not inside them. Never use cotton buds to clean inside your baby’s ears. Wash the rest of your baby’s face, neck and hands in the same way and dry them gently with the towel.

Take off the nappy and wash your baby’s bits with fresh cotton wool and warm water. Dry very carefully, including between the skin folds, and put on a clean nappy.

It will help your baby to relax if you keep talking while you wash them. The more they hear your voice, the more they’ll get used to listening to you and start to understand what you’re saying.

Happy Bathtime from the team at Just Another Baby!

Advice on how to wash and bath your baby

Advice on how to wash and bath your baby

Washing and bathing your baby for the first time can be a little scary especially when your baby gets upset when being undressed and immersed in water. So below are a few answers to some common questions. We hope they help to make bath times less stressful and, hopefully in time, more fun!

How often should I bath my baby?
The general feeling is that you don’t have to bath your baby every day, twice or three times a week would be fine. But with much of the advice we give, it’s really up to you and your baby.

What is ‘Topping and tailing’?
What you do need to do on a daily basis is wash your baby’s face, neck, hands and bottom. This is sometimes referred to as ‘topping and tailing’.
Topping and tailing can be done on a changing mat or your lap. Make sure the room is warm and that your baby isn’t in a draft. Choose the right time to wash your baby, don’t bath your little one after a feed or when they are hungry or sleepy. The best time to bath your baby is when they are wide awake and contented.
For topping and tailing you will need a bowl of warm water, some cotton wool, a towel and a fresh nappy. Make sure the water is warm and not hot. It’s important when topping and tailing always to use fresh piece of cotton wool for each body part. For newborns it is also important to clean around the baby’s navel. For advice on keeping the navel clean and dry please ask your midwife.
