Helpful Tips for successful Breast to Bottle Feeding

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Being a new parent can be as hectic as it can rewarding with all the sleepless nights and dirty nappies so even though you may be breast feeding exclusively, (which does save on having to sterilise all those bottles!), it’s a good idea to prepare to combine this with bottle feeding at some stage.

This gives you the freedom to bottle your breast milk and feed your baby whilst you are out and about, if you feel uncomfortable about breast feeding in public. Also it allows you to share the feeding with your partner if you want to catch up on some sleep or (if you have the energy) have a night out. Whatever your circumstances it is generally a good idea for your baby to be able to switch from breast to bottle so you both feel content and the feeding routine isn’t unsettled. Below are some of the products that our of mums have tried and tested at Just Another Baby?  These products can help to make the transition from breast to bottle a simple one. Newborn Baby Essentials

Just Another Baby are back with another top 10! This time we are focusing on your newborn baby essentials. I hope it helps!

1. Nappies. Check out non-disposables, they really aren’t as daunting as they seem but always have a pack of newborn ones to hand in the first few weeks for any emergencies! For more info on re-usable nappies click here

2. Cotton wool. Warm water and cotton wool are the best way to clean your new little one’s face and bottom (called topping and tailing) Although you will move onto baby wipes before too long it seems more gentle this way at first.

3. Body vests and sleep suits with feet – babies hands and feet are the first to feel the cold.

4. Fitted cot sheets – lots of different sizes are available depending on whether your baby is going into a moses basket, cradle or straight into a cot.

5. Swaddle blankets – your newborn will feel more safe and secure if swaddled in the first few weeks.

6. Grobags – the baby sleeping bag for babies for when you think he/she may want a little more freedom of movement.

Top ten tips for those first few days with your baby

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Going home with your new born baby is exciting, exhilarating and a little nerve-racking! You have been waiting for this moment for the past 9 (or is it actually 10!) months and you are eager to begin this new stage in your life. Here are a few tips that we found helped to keep our heads straight in those first few fuzzy days.

1. If time, before you have your baby, prepare a few meals that you can freeze ahead. This will enable you to eat sensibly and without too much thought in the first few days.

2. Once home, sleep when baby sleeps. Despite what anyone says, your baby won’t be in any sort of routine for the first 4-6 weeks – grab sleep when you can, it will keep you sane – sort of!

    Top 10 tips for twins

    Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Finding out you are pregnant is a shock enough, finding out later on in your pregnancy that you are pregnant with twins can be mind boggling. Speaking from experience (I have twin girls), I have written down the top 10 tips which helped me drag myself through those first few groggy weeks of motherhood.

    1. It may sound harsh (and seem unnatural) but wake your babies to get them into a routine of feeding every 3-4 hours (depending on their birth weight). This way you will get into a pattern quicker and be able to grab some much-needed sleep yourself in the first few weeks. When they are strong enough to hold their heads and sit in a bouncy chair (and if you are bottle feeding), position yourself between them on the floor and feed them both at the same time! If breast feeding, attempt – if help is at hand – to tandem feed, i.e. a baby on each breast at the same time. I found a v-pillow invaluable in the short time I tandem fed.

    2. If breast feeding, write down which baby had which boob and how long they fed for. If bottle feeding write down how many mls each baby had and when. Do the same with what you find in their nappies, i.e. if they are wet or dirty. It may sound silly but when you are tired you will forget which twin did a poo and which one you fed last!

    3. Swaddle your babies. They may look like Egyptian mummies but they really do feel more secure and sleep better as a consequence! When you feel they want to stretch a little more move them into a Grobag. There are many baby sleeping bags on the market but Grobags are the only brand recommended by FSID.

    4. Keep a supply of nappies, wipes and nappy sacks in the rooms most used in your house, i.e. the babies’ bedroom and the sitting room. This will save both time and energy (very important if you have had a c-section).
