Summer Grobags and the Benefits of Baby Sleeping Bags

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

grobag's Louberry bear designFollowing our recent poll on Not Just Another Baby, 84% of our customers are choosing to put their babies to bed in a baby sleeping bag as apposed to traditional bedding (sheets/blankets). Although there are many brands of baby sleeping bags out in the market, we sell the the UK Mum’s favourite brand: Grobags. We have put all our children in Grobags over the years and really believe they are the best value for money. This blog lists just a few reasons why you should consider using a summer Grobag for this gorgeous weather we are currently having and also provides you with advice on how to chosen the right size and tog for your baby.

Grobag Baby Sleep Bags are the safe alternative to traditional sheets and blankets. There are no covers to kick off or get tangled up in, so little ones stay cosy and safe during the night. Grobag is the UK’s Baby Sleep Bag specialist and have changed the way mums and dads put their babies to bed! With clever little extras like our secure zip-click and chin guard they are constantly improving and evolving the product. Grobag is FSID’s only recommended Baby Sleep Bag specialist – the UK cot death research charity which promotes and raises awareness of safer sleep for babies. Every aspect of your Grobag has been designed and manufactured with safety and quality as a top priority. The free nursery thermometer will give you confidence that you are using your Grobag safely and correctly too. With 3 Mother & Baby Gold awards, voted for by mums, both you and your little one can be rest assured that you have chosen the UK’s favourite Baby Sleep Bag. Remember: a Baby Sleep Bag by any other name is not a Grobag!

Choosing a summer grobag size
Summer Grobags and the heavier 2.5 tog Grobags can be used when your baby weighs more than 8 lbs 8oz (0-6 mths size). It is very important to check that your baby’s head cannot pass through the neck-hole when the Grobag is fastened for use. Please remember that these are recommendations only as all babies are different.

grobag tog chart

Choosing a tog
A tog measurement is a European warmth rating: the higher the tog, the warmer the product. Grobag baby sleep bags are available in three tog ratings , For all year round choose a 2.5 tog, Summer Grobags are 1.0 tog and are ideal for warmer weather and daytime naps and 0.5 tog, ideal for holidays and heatwaves.

grobag what to wear chartWhat to wear
With the current temperature a 1.0 tog Summer Grobag is ideal, but what your baby wears to bed will depend on the tog of Grobag baby sleep bag you choose and the temperature of the baby’s bedroom. (In the same way as you would adjust nightclothes and number of blankets). As a guide, please refer to the table. Please remember, though, that babies are all different and, just as with blankets and sheets, you will soon discover what your baby is most comfortable wearing — placing your fingers on your baby’s chest is the best indicator of whether they are too hot/too cold/just right as babies’ hands often feel cool.

Working with FSID
From day one Grobag has worked very closely with the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID), who is the leading UK charity at the forefront of researching and promoting safe sleep for infants. Try to remember that cot death is rare and that if you follow advice such as putting your baby to bed on their back, you will be reducing their risk of cot death considerably.

Gro-Anywhere Black Out Blinds – help block out daylight in your baby’s bedroom

Monday, April 4th, 2011

The Gro-Anywhere Black out blind is a great product for helping to block out sunlight, either for your babie’s day time nap or for bedtimes when it is still light and bright outside. As much as the longer days are great for parents it can mean that older babies, especially toddlers, can get confused or resist bedtime because it’s still light outside.

The Gro-Anywhere black out blind is great for home use or if you go away for the weekend and the curtains are not as effective as in your baby’s room at home, meaning you getting up earlier on your weekend ‘break’ or holiday than you would do at home.

Gro Anywhere Black-Out Blind

The Gro Anywhere Black-Out Blind is perfect for taking on holiday or to use at home in the summer months. It takes minutes to put into place, attaching directly to the window with suction cups to ensure a close fit that really does block out light. It will adapt to fit any size of window, up to a maximum size of 135cm x 200 cm, is light-weight and comes complete with a handy travel bag.

1 tog GroBags

Get prepared for the warmer days and nights ahead (fingers crossed!) with 1.0 tog Grobags. There are some fabulous designs available from Just Another Baby? for both boys and girls along with some more neutral Grobag designs.

Gro Egg Room Themometer

In order to know what tog Grobag you should use – it can easily vary between day and night sleeps at this time of year – use a Gro-egg room themometer. Great looking and practical, the Gro Egg changes colour so you can tell at a glance whether your baby’s room temperature is right. A yellow glow suggests a comfortable temperature for your baby to sleep in, while a blue glow means it is too cold and a red glow too warm. The colour acts as a visual reminder for you to modify either the room temperature or your baby’s bedding in order to maintain a safe sleeping environment. As an added bonus, the Gro Egg acts as a gentle night light to stop you fumbling about too much during those killer night feeds!

New Baby Essential Items

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

There are many lists of essential items for your newborn. We have tried to edit these to the bare essentials to help save you time and money!!

Pushchair – this needs to be suitable from birth so your newborn can lie flat(ish). Travel systems, including car seats, are very popular as you are able to attach a car seat to the pushchair chassis or seat. Always check your buggy out in a shop even if you want to buy it online. Familiarise yourself with how to put the buggy up and down and attach the car seat, etc and double check the weight – remember you will have to lug this in and out of your car! Check out the Wallaboo Car Seat covers - an easy to clean solution for when you’re little one gets into finger food on the move!

Cot – You don’t necessarily need a crib or moses basket. Newborns are perfectly safe sleeping in a proper cot from day one. Try and look ahead and invest in a cot bed – your little baby is going to be a big toddler one day! Most cot beds accommodate children up to the age of 5 years.

Bedding – ideally you want three sets of cot sheets, one on the bed, one in the wash and a spare. Use Grobag Swaddles and Grobag sleeping bags. These come in different togs for different temperatures and come in some great designs.

Gro Egg Room Thermometer – this isn’t necessarily an essential but helps when you are suffering from sleep deprivation to know whether to use a 1 tog Grobag or a 2.5 tog Grobag. The Gro-egg thermometer glows blue when the room is too cold, amber when it is correct and red when it is too hot.

Monitor – Standard audio models mean that you can hear your baby from another room – handy for when you are trying to catch up on some sleep too! Some versions show images or monitor breathing.

Changing Bag – From the moment your little one is born you will always have lots of “stuff” to lug around. Keep a changing bag stocked up with nappies, nappy sacks, wipes, a change of clothes, bottles, dummies, etc to help you get out of the door faster. Keep a travel changing mat handy too. Check out Bababing’s great range with the Bababing Day Tripper Satchel, the Bababing Tote Changing Bag and the Bababing Roll Out Travel Mats. Wallaboo Changing Bags offer some fab colours!

Carrier or Sling – An initial convenient alternative to a buggy. Baby carriers are not only comforting for your baby but also allow you to have two hands free – great if you have a toddler or are having a little retail therapy!  Great designs include the Wallaboo Sling, (in colours to match your Wallaboo Changing Bag) the Wilkinet Baby Carrier and the Hippychick Hipseat for older babies.

Nappies - Check out Tots Bots Cloth Nappies as a cheaper, more environmental alternative to disposables. On average you should change your newborn babies nappy up to 6 times a day. This will cost you approximately £8-10 per week on disposable nappies – over £500 a year, more as your baby gets older and the nappies get bigger. Tots Bots Birth to Potty cloth nappies are £275.00 for a set which should last you for as long as your baby is in nappies, giving your quite a big saving both in your pocket and on your conscience!

Bottles and Steraliser/steralising fluid – It is important to keep a bottle or two handy in the early days for times when you/your baby may be struggling to breast feed. Even if you are breast feeding you may wish to use a dummy which will need to be steralised initially.

It goes without saying that the easiest thing to give your newborn is lots of love, cuddles and kisses!

Winter time Babies..

Friday, November 5th, 2010

With the clocks going back and the night’s drawing in it is a sure sign that winter is well and truly on its way, with all the joy that it brings for our little ones! Gone are the snuffle-free weeks of summer. For the next 6 months your baby will no doubt be hampered with one cold after another and if they are anything like mine were, they will have a semi-permanent dribble of snot escaping from their noses!

Although coughs and colds are inevitable – and to some degree essential to build up babies immunity – there are a few tried and tested methods I have discovered over the years which may go a little way to help ease those disturbed nights – for all of you!

  • Buy a vapouriser – Suitable for babies from 3 months plus, these plug straight into any socket to emit natural vapours to help promote clear and easy breathing.
  • Put droplets of Olbas Oil for Children ( or any junior decongestion drops for) onto a muslin and place near (but out of reach of) your baby.
  • Invest in a humidifier. These vary in price but can be brought for as little as £20. This was an absolute breakthrough for my 15 month old who seems to suffer from a permanent night-time cough during the winter months. A humidifier is also good for babies who suffer from asthma.
  • Don’t let baby feel the cold after a nice warm bath. Check out the  award winning Cuddledry bath towels to help keep them snug before bed.
  • Adapt your babies bedding for the colder temperatures. 2.5 tog Grobags are perfect for colder nights but keep a 1.0 tog handy for warmer daytime naps.
  • Buy a footmuff or blanket for your buggy – check out Under the Nile’s organic Egyptian cotton blanket or Wallaboo’s fabulous cosy footmuffs available for both buggys and car seats in a great variety of colours.
  • Babies’ extremities are the first to feel the cold. Keep babies’ toes cosy with Sock-ons. They are a simple yet brilliant little product to keep your babies socks on. Available in white, pink and blue they should be part of your baby’s wardrobe from day one – they really do solve the problem of finding stray socks everywhere!
  • As my Mum always says ‘prevention is better than the cure’. Keep coughs and colds at bay with Echinacea for children. Always read the label or ask advice but a few drops of this in your baby’s water, juice or milk will be tasteless to them and a fantastic way to keep their immune system boosted and ward off those nasty germs!

Sleep Advice for Colder Weather

Advice for the cold nights ahead!

Some of us are lucky enough to be enjoying unseasonally warm weather at the moment, but there’s no denying that the nights are drawing in now and it won’t be long until the clocks go back. It’s lovely to snuggle up and keep warm with your baby, but it is also worth remembering that the optimum room temperature for a sleeping baby is between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius, which can feel surprisingly cool to many adults. Using a reliable room thermometer can help to ensure that your baby doesn’t overheat, and you can vary their bedding and sleepwear for maximum comfort.

If your baby is using a Grobag, read our blog ‘Why use a grobag baby sleeping bag’ for further advice on which tog rating your baby will need, as well as the appropriate sleepwear.

If you’re unsure whether your baby is too hot, too cold or just right, placing your fingers on the skin at his/her chest will give you a rough indicator of body temperature (babies’ hands can feel really cold, but this is not always a sign of a low core temperature). Together, and probably as a process of trial and error, you will learn the individual preferences that help give your little a comfy night’s sleep during Autumn and Winter.

Autumn with your baby

Monday, September 13th, 2010

As the warm summer sunshine starts to fade, mums need to think about keeping their offspring healthy, happy and safe as autumn approaches.

As the temperature starts to dip outside, at home use a room thermometer to accurately measure the temperature in your baby’s room. You can then make sure they have the right clothing for nap and bedtimes.

It`s natural, especially in the colder weather, to want to wrap up your baby but overheating is associated with an increased risk of cot death. Babies sleep comfortably in a room temperature between 16c (61f) and 20c (68f). Depending on the exact temperature level, layer the sheets and blankets appropriately and combine with appropriate sleepwear, or choose the correct tog of baby sleeping bag with the right sleep suit or pajamas underneath.

When venturing out in the colder weather your baby needs to be suitably dressed. A baby in a pram isn`t moving and won`t get warmed up by exercise so they are likely to feel the cold more quickly. Wrap them up warmly and snugly on colder days and put on a hat (with a strap to stop them pulling it off) as a lot of body heat escapes through the head. Tiny hands feel chilly quickly so put on gloves, again with some kind of tie to keep them on. Do remember though to unwrap your baby when you get into the warmth to prevent overheating.

Newborn Baby

Newborn Baby Essentials

Just Another Baby are back with another top 10! This time we are focusing on your newborn baby essentials. I hope it helps!

1. Nappies. Check out non-disposables, they really aren’t as daunting as they seem but always have a pack of newborn ones to hand in the first few weeks for any emergencies! For more info on re-usable nappies click here

2. Cotton wool. Warm water and cotton wool are the best way to clean your new little one’s face and bottom (called topping and tailing) Although you will move onto baby wipes before too long it seems more gentle this way at first.

3. Body vests and sleep suits with feet – babies hands and feet are the first to feel the cold.

4. Fitted cot sheets – lots of different sizes are available depending on whether your baby is going into a moses basket, cradle or straight into a cot.

5. Swaddle blankets – your newborn will feel more safe and secure if swaddled in the first few weeks.

6. Grobags – the baby sleeping bag for babies for when you think he/she may want a little more freedom of movement.

Top 10 tips for twins

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Finding out you are pregnant is a shock enough, finding out later on in your pregnancy that you are pregnant with twins can be mind boggling. Speaking from experience (I have twin girls), I have written down the top 10 tips which helped me drag myself through those first few groggy weeks of motherhood.

1. It may sound harsh (and seem unnatural) but wake your babies to get them into a routine of feeding every 3-4 hours (depending on their birth weight). This way you will get into a pattern quicker and be able to grab some much-needed sleep yourself in the first few weeks. When they are strong enough to hold their heads and sit in a bouncy chair (and if you are bottle feeding), position yourself between them on the floor and feed them both at the same time! If breast feeding, attempt – if help is at hand – to tandem feed, i.e. a baby on each breast at the same time. I found a v-pillow invaluable in the short time I tandem fed.

2. If breast feeding, write down which baby had which boob and how long they fed for. If bottle feeding write down how many mls each baby had and when. Do the same with what you find in their nappies, i.e. if they are wet or dirty. It may sound silly but when you are tired you will forget which twin did a poo and which one you fed last!

3. Swaddle your babies. They may look like Egyptian mummies but they really do feel more secure and sleep better as a consequence! When you feel they want to stretch a little more move them into a Grobag. There are many baby sleeping bags on the market but Grobags are the only brand recommended by FSID.

4. Keep a supply of nappies, wipes and nappy sacks in the rooms most used in your house, i.e. the babies’ bedroom and the sitting room. This will save both time and energy (very important if you have had a c-section).
